We’ve already published an article on how to troubleshoot a Samsung Galaxy J7 that won’t charge, in this post, I will address an issue involving the same device that won’t turn on as it is also one of the most commonly reported power-related issues and we’re pretty much sure J7 owners will be able to experience it sooner or later.

Now that we’ve established, the importance of the battery or power on your smartphone, it’s time we present the possibilities why your device won’t turn on and we will base our troubleshooting on those possibilities:

• System crash caused the device to freeze leaving it with a black screen that’s unresponsive
• The battery got totally drained that it can no longer power the device up even for a few seconds
• Some caches or data files got corrupted for some reason and caused the phone not to respond
• The device sustained some serious liquid and/or physical damages that’s preventing it from booting up

Now, based on these possibilities, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Verify it’s not just a system crash issue

One of the good things with the J7 is that it has a removable battery. It’s something you should be thankful for because you can isolate what the problem really is. So, the first thing you need to do is to perform the battery pull procedure, which, by the way, is very effective in fixing minor firmware and hardware glitches. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open the back cover.
2. Pull the battery out.
3. While the battery is out, press and hold the Power key for a minute.
4. Replace the battery and secure it with the back cover.
5. Attempt to turn the phone on.

If the phone turns on after this very simple procedure, then the problem was caused by a simple firmware issue.

Step 2: Try charging your Galaxy J7

If the problem persists after doing the first step, then try to charge your phone to rule out the possibility that the problem is caused by a drained battery. Aside from the obvious reason, you will also know if it responds when it detects that current is flowing through the circuits. If it doesn’t, then you should first address the non charging issue before you continue your troubleshooting. If you can bring the phone to charge, then leave it plugged in for at least 10 minutes before trying to turn it on. If it doesn’t turn on but charge, proceed to the next step but if it neither charges nor turns on, it’s time you send it in for checkup and/or repair.

Step 3: Try booting the phone to different modes

You do this if the phone charges but still refuses to turn on. You’re actually trying to find out if the phone would boot up when all third-party apps are disabled or if it powers on when the Android interface isn’t loaded. So, try to boot up your J7 in safe mode first, here’s how…

1. Press and hold the Power button (located on the right) until Phone options is displayed then release.
2. Select and hold Power off until the Reboot to Safe Mode prompt appears then release.
3. Tap RESTART. Note: This restart process may take up to one minute to complete.
4. Upon restart, Safe mode appears in the lower left of the unlock/home screen.

If the phone boots up in this mode, then the problem is solved partially, or at least, we know it still powers on and that’s something. But if it won’t power on in safe mode, then try booting it in recovery mode and if successful, continue wiping the cache partition:

1. Power off your Galaxy J7. Press and hold the Power key, tap Power off and then touch POWER OFF to confirm.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up button and then press and hold the Home key. While holding both, press and hold the Power key.
3. When the Android logo appears on the screen, release all three keys. It may take a minute before the Android recovery screen appears.
4. While on Android recovery screen, use the Volume Down key to highlight options, in this case, highlight the option ‘wipe data/factory reset.’
5. Press the Power key to choose the highlighted option.
6. Press the Volume Down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ option is highlighted.
7. Press the Power key to confirm the reset.
8. Once the reset is complete, press the Power key to choose ‘Reboot system now.’
9. The phone will restart a little longer than usual and the reset is finished.

Step 4: Seek assistance from a technician

If the device refuses to turn on after steps 1 to 3, then there’s nothing much you can do about it. It’s time you sought assistance from a technician or from your service provider. Bring the phone to a local shop or to the store where it will be checked and tested by a tech.

How to Flash Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime SM-G610Y Stock ROM Using Odin

Mic not picking up voice. 1. Firstly, you need to know that the Odin flashing tool is really easy to use, but it only works on the Windows operating system. You won’t get the flashing tool to load on a Mac or Linux computer. It doesn’t really matter what version of the Windows operating system that you’re using as long as it is something above Windows XP.

2. Download and install the Samsung USB drivers on the computer if you don’t have them already.

3. Download the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime SM-G610Y stock firmware package from the links above directly to the computer. Extract the file by right-clicking on it and choosing the option to extract. When you do, you’ll see the tar.md5 file inside. That’s the file you’ll be using to do the flashing.

4. Download the Odin flashing tool. It doesn’t really matter what version, but the latest is the most up to date so grab that one. Extract the Odin file and then double-click on the Odin executable file (.exe) that is found from within the Odin folder after extraction. You should now have the Odin interface open on the computer and waiting for you to connect to it.

5. Boot the Samsung mobile device into the Download Mode by first powering it down and then rebooting by holding the “Volume Down + Home + Power” keys at the same time.

6. A yellow warning triangle will come up on the device’s display. At this time you need to press the “Volume Up” button. You’ll then see the device getting into the Download Mode. It’s then ready for the flashing.

7. When in Download Mode, connect the Samsung mobile device to the computer with the USB cable.

8. If you have installed the USB drivers correctly, the Odin flashing tool should detect your device. You can tell this by observing the ID: COM port lighting up with a color, usually yellow or blue. (It doesn’t matter what color, it’s the lighting up that counts.)

9. After the device is picked up by Odin, click on the “PDA” or “AP” button, depending on what button your version of the Odin flashing tool has.

10. Navigate to the stock ROM folder and upload the tar.md5 file to this location in Odin.

11. Without changing any of the default settings, click on the “Start” button in Odin, and the flashing then begins.

12. Wait until Odin shows a “Pass” message before disconnecting your device.

13. Your smartphone may now be in a boot loop, which will be fixed by booting the device into its stock Recovery mode.

14. Press and Hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously. When you can feel the smartphone vibrate, release the Power button while continuing to hold down the Volume Up and Home buttons.

15. You should now be in Recovery mode. From the Recovery menu, select “Wipe data/factory reset.”

16. Wait for the cache to be cleared and then choose the “Reboot system now” option from the Recovery menu.

17. The smartphone will reboot, and you’ll see the Android operating system ready to go.

Important Notes

Back Up Your Data: You should always back up your data before you begin flashing new firmware files to your smartphone or tablet. All of your pictures, music, videos, documents, etc. should be still on your device after you have updated the firmware, but you may need to restore the contacts and applications from a backup.

Wipe Cache and Factory Reset: Some people claim that taking a factory reset isn’t necessary after updates, but at the very least you should wipe the system cache after installing new firmware. This way you can help eliminate any performance issues and battery draining bugs. Taking a factory reset is the best way of avoiding common problems many users face after applying software updates.
