For BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle on the PlayStation 4, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'Are you guys overall disappointed in this game?'

1 year agoRoster

The game has 40 characters and 20 of them are locked away as DLC.

YES. Half the roster is DLC. The base launcher has 10 BlazBlue Characters, 4 Persona characters and ONLY 2 RWBY characters and 4 Under Night Characters.

Tag

There are no Adachi, Terumi or any Persona 4 Ultimax characters, Heck the full investigation team isn't even playable at launch (naoto, kanji, teddie, all the persona 3 characters etc are all locked away as DLC)

This is actually disgusting and I'm honestly 100% disappointed in Arc System Works. This is completely unacceptable in my opinion. I'm definitely passing on this game.

It is like they gave up and put everyone on Dragon Ball.

Edit: The game will be $40. Still doesn't make the 20 characters DLC lock okay.

Blazblue Cross Tag Battle Dlc

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is a fighting game developed and published by Arc System Works in 2018. It is a crossover between BlazBlue, Persona 4, Under Night In-Birth, RWBY and Arcana Heart.

Why It Sucks

  1. The gameplay has been dumbed down to ridiculous levels:
    1. The attack buttons (A and B) are autocombos. And no one likes autocombos.
    2. The Clash (C) button is an overhead that triggers a combined/solo attack if it hits on the ground (and some other attack from the air). Though this one has a precise timing for the bonus damage in the combined/solo attack.
    3. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER SHARES THE SAME INPUTS FOR SPECIALS. The two distortion drives are 214BC or 236BC. For those who don't know, BC is the throw command and the numbers represent a quarter circle down-to-left and down-to-right respectively (think of it as a joystick over a numpad). and the astral is 222BC. THOSE ARE EXTREMELY SIMPLE COMMANDS.
    4. The damage is absurdly high and unless you're a god at swapping, matches are really short.
    5. At least Active Switching is a thing.
  2. Severe lack of single-player content. There are no Score Attack, Time Attack, Abyss or Arcade modes in the game.
  3. Almost all of the assets in the game are recycled from previous games. (Except for stuff related with the RWBY characters)
  4. Half of the roster is locked behind DLCs and to add insult to injury, some of the DLC characters are in the story mode but were unplayable until the DLC launched! What were they thinking?!
  5. Misses some important characters, like Bang and Litchi Faye Ling from Blazblue, who have been in the series since the FIRST game or any RWBY character aside from Team RWBY themselves (However, a recent tweet has hinted that there may be more RWBY characters coming).
  6. The lack of characters from Arc System Works's flagship series Guilty Gear and from others franchises that were handled at one point by Arc System Works, such as Fist of the North Star andDragon Ball. (with the exception of Guilty Gear, the others can be explained as the licenses/franchises belonging to Bandai Namco for Dragon Ball and Sega for First of the North Star.)
  7. Flawed PC launch (for some reason, NVIDIA users had to manually change the GPU that BBTAG initiated because it used by default the integrated one) that thankfully got fixed up later on.
  8. It's been speculated that the game was rushed for EVO, which explains why half of the roster is DLC.
  9. Extremely bad PR which gave a lot of backlash to the game due to the sloppy reveal of the DLC practices months before the game was released (essentially killing the overwhelming hype the game had), which were solved later.
  10. In the RWBY Story mode episode, Yang is not playable at all and only appears at the beginning and the end of the episode.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. This is the first time that the Under Night In-Birth characters have English voices and many of the actors do a great job, especially Ian Sinclair as Gordeau, Ben Diskin as Merkava, and Cassandra Lee Morris as Mika (In fact, many fans have said that Morris' performance made them warm up to Mika, who used to be the game's least popular character). Speaking of which, the BlazBlue English cast returned after it was skipped from BlazBlue Central Fiction. Also, this is the first time Es has an English voice.
  2. Blake and Yang are free DLC, so you don't have to pay to get all of Team RWBY. They are also already available in the PC version.
  3. Every character feels unique in their own right.
  4. The 'Phantom Field', the final boss in the story mode, is pretty funny. There is also some good interactions between the characters in the different story modes.
  5. The gameplay, despite being dumbed down, is still pretty fun.
  6. The RWBY mixes and the Crossing Fate versions of every franchise are great.
  7. Monty Oum, the late creator of RWBY, was a huge Blazblue fan, so it's kind of heartwarming to see the developers of said series include his work in one of their games, even if he himself didn't live to see it. It also shows how far RWBY as a series has come.
  8. The base game costs $39.99 and the three DLC packs of 3 characters cost $3.99 (which is around a dollar per character) each, so the full game costs $51.96 which is less than the cost of an average AAA game of $59.99, meaning that the DLCs don't excessively overprice the base game.
  9. The Season 2 trailer seems to have won back some people by confirming Teddie and Seth (Two very important characters on the Persona 4 and Under Night In-Birth side, respectively, who were missing), revealing Arcana Heart as the fifth franchise and announcing a sixth franchise.
