Hot Wheels id is a new smart car and track system from Mattel that combines toys and video games where the fun is as much in the physical play as it is on the screen.

It's no easy thing to get the cross over between toys and technology right. It's been some time since the heyday of Skylanders, Lego Dimensions and Disney Infinity filling game store shelves, and with Anki closing, there hasn't been much to write about in what we used to call toys-to-life. We've moved on to other things. Kids have moved on to Fortnite and the like.

There's a lot of fun to be had setting up the different configurations. But why this really matters is that the app can now accurately track how far your car has gone, along with the speed, laps and wins. The new plunger booster also registers on the app so you can see the exact number of RPMs you adding to the cars as they whiz around.

This all comes together in the challenge modes of the game that set players the task of using the plunger to achieve specific things with the cars. I liked this because it moves physical play on from just bashing the launcher as fast and hard as you can, to needing to finesse this control. Hitting just the right level of power took a lot of timing and practice.

These elements all contribute to the stats of each of the Hot Wheels cars. This, in turn, provides in-game credit to upgrade and unlock other cars. You can also unlock cars with in-app purchases, although this aspect wasn't working when I tried the game out. It will be important for Mattel to balance these in-app purchases with the equivalent physical prices. This is something that Angry Birds Go! and it's physical/virtual toy car marketplace never quite cracked.

How this works, time will tell, but there are some intelligent design decisions already evident, that parents will appreciate. In terms of value, having that physical car makes a significant difference. The game adds to this with a system that requires real-world play to unlock more goes on the video game side of things. Once you run out of credit in this part of the game you have to go and play with the real toy cars before you can continue. It sounds like a small thing, but in terms of healthy gaming and building in the need to break up play, this will make a big difference.

Another nice touch is that you can use your existing die-cast cars on the track if you want. It also comes with small converters so you can connect the new smart track to your existing Hot Wheels set-up. Again, these are small touches but maximise the value families will get from their investment in the new system.

It's all very interesting. But most interesting is where this might go. Having a developer like Studio Gobo involved makes me wonder if they will be bringing Hot Wheels id to consoles -- particularly as the Switch already has an NFC reader in its controllers. Also, the portal itself is modular so could be used in future expansions without the need to buy the tech again as we saw with needing a new Skylanders portal most years.

Hot Wheels id vehicles, Race Portal and Smart Track Kit are available for purchase starting today exclusively at Apple stores and on Apple.com. The app will be available on Android and Amazon platforms within a month and the toys in general stores in September. The Hot Wheels id free-to-play companion game is available for download from the Apple App Store. The cars cost $6.99. The Race Portal is $39.99 and the Smart Track Kit is $179.99. The Hot Wheels id app is available as a free-to-play standalone game.
