  • Quanti anni hai? As opposed to English, Italians don’t say Io sono — anni but Io ho — anni using the verb avere and not essere. Ok, now that you can say your age, you can start practising and build more complex numbers. Listen to the audio file, write down the 10 numbers and check your score.

In Italian, the old saying dare i numeri, literally, “giving the numbers” means to go crazy. Stai dando i numeri? Are you nuts? Of course there’s nothing as rational as numbers to measure and weigh the reality of things. We are going to study the numeri cardinali, Italian numbers (uno due tre ect…) and study other types of numbers like numeri ordinali in other posts. Listen to the audio files and repeat. Pretty straight forward, like it happens in every language, these are the basic words used to build all the other Italian numbers.

Da dieci a diciannove – ten to nineteen

    • 10 – dieci
    • 11 – undici
    • 12 – dodici
    • 13 – tredici
    • 14 – quattordici
  • 15 – quindici
  • 16 – sedici
  • 17 – diciassette
  • 18 – diciotto
  • 19 – diciannove

Just like in English, Italian numbers ten to nineteen are different. You only have to memorize them.

Da venti a ventinove – twenty to twenty-nine

    • 20 – venti
    • 21 – ventuno
    • 22 – ventidue
    • 23 – ventitré

Multipli di dieci – Multiples of ten

  • 60 – sessanta
  • 70 – settanta
  • 80 – ottanta
  • 90 – novanta

So we have venti, trenta, and then quaranta, cinquanta …anta. When someone turns 40, you can joke saying welcome to the “anta”, benvenuto negli “anta”. Please note that 1 and 8 combined with multiples of ten, eat the vowel before —> ventuno, ventotto; trentuno, trentotto; quarantuno, quarantotto; cinquantuno, cinquantotto and so on (and not ventiuno, ventiotto; trentauno, trentaotto etc)

    Try to say the following numbers in Italian: 31, 43, 34, 57, 98, 51, 64, 72, 38, 99.

    • Da cento in poi – Over a hundred

    • 100 – cento
    • 200 – duecento
    • 500 – cinquecento
    • 1000 – mille
    • 2000 – duemila
  • 10.000 – diecimila
  • 100.000 – centomila
  • 1.000.000 un milione
  • 2.000.000 due milioni
  • 1.000.000.000 un miliardo
  • https://dante-learning.com/eng/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/100-a-1-miliardo.mp3

Mille is singular, all its multiples are “–mila”. Watch out, one billion in Italian is un miliardo. In this case, the English billion is an exception. In other languages the equivalent translation of miliardo is common. You now have the tools to start composing all the numbers you want. Let’s start with a simple question. How old are you?

    • Quanti anni hai? Ho — anni.

As opposed to English, Italians don’t say Io sono — anni but Io ho — anni using the verb avere and not essere.

Ok, now that you can say your age, you can start practising and build more complex numbers. Listen to the audio file, write down the 10 numbers and check your score.
